Marathon Seasonal Reset — What You Keep and What You Lose

Every Marathon season starts fresh. Bungie has confirmed that each new season brings a full progression reset for all players. Here's exactly what that means.

What Resets (You Lose)

  • All gear and loot — your stash starts empty
  • Contract progression — seasonal contracts reset
  • Faction progression — faction upgrade levels reset
  • Player level — back to zero

This applies to everyone equally — no player enters a new season with an advantage from the previous one.

What Carries Over (You Keep)

  • All cosmetics — every skin, banner, and visual item you earned or purchased
  • Titles earned through gameplay milestones
  • Achievements — permanent record of your accomplishments
  • Codex progression — lore discoveries carry forward (uncovering the secrets of Tau Ceti takes multiple seasons)
  • Liaison contract progression — you won't need to re-unlock factions each season

What This Means for Ranked Mode

Ranked Mode resets each season. Your rank from Season 1 will not carry into Season 2. Every season is a fresh competitive ladder — everyone starts from Bronze and climbs again.

This is by design. Bungie's goal is to keep each season dangerous and the loot meaningful, while ensuring new players can always enter without feeling behind.

Why Bungie Designed It This Way

From Bungie's official Season 1 announcement:

"Seasonal resets mean that the game stays dangerous, loot feels meaningful, and there's always a good opportunity to get back into the game or bring a friend in without feeling behind the curve."

The reset system also creates a "let's ball" mentality at the end of each season — once the new season is days away, you can take big risks with your best gear knowing a fresh start is coming.

The Zero-to-Hero Loop

Each season follows the same arc:

  1. Start with nothing
  2. Complete contracts, build faction upgrades, grow your power floor
  3. Take on harder zones and enemy Runners as your options expand
  4. Climb the Ranked ladder in the second half of the season
  5. End the season with your best gear, taking risks knowing a reset is coming

Then Season 2 begins and the climb starts again — with new content, new meta, and new stories to uncover.
